A retired pastor living in Cape Town, South Africa was driving by the train tracks. He saw a strange plastic bag sitting there and got a sinking feeling. He stopped to investigate. Pastor Van Wyk had devoted his life to God. The pastor was used to seeing the good in everything– even things that were tainted– but what he discovered that day would haunt him forever. Pastor Van Wyk was driving along the railroad tracks and saw a tied up plastic bag. His gut sank– he knew something wasn’t right about the situation. He stopped his car anyway and walked over to the bag. What he found inside broke his heart. There was a severely abused puppy tied up with shoelaces. His four legs were tied together as well as his snout. The dog couldn’t bark. He couldn’t pant. Who would do such a thing? The pastor was afraid to touch the dog– when he tried, the puppy winced and yelped. The pup needed professionals to handle everything IMMEDIATELY! The pastor reached out to Helderberg Animal Welfare Society. The rescue group could help the pup get all the medical attention he needed. They fittingly named him Trax. The group posted this to their Facebook page: “A little update on Trax – the doggy who arrived at our kennels yesterday after being rescued off the train tracks, in a plastic bag with his mouth and 4 feet tied together. After cutting all the ropes off him, our vet examined him and he got a thorough health check. Besides the fact that he has mange and is covered in sores, scabs and wounds- he is otherwise healthy. He is still quite young. He has had a warm bath, is eating very well, and is responding so nicely to all the TLC and love we are giving him! He loves to be with us and likes to gently paw us for some extra attention. His tail is wagging a little and we know he feels safe, relaxed and loved. He spent most of today sleeping in his bed (under 2 blankets) so has really been snug and warm in this cold weather! He is not up for adoption yet and will only be ready for a new home in a few weeks as we are treating him for his mange and the sores all over his body need to heal. He is still quite timid but is coming out of his shell nicely and all in all- he is doing very well! Thank you for all the messages of love and support for him!” Trax suffered from a head twitch from the abuse that would likely be permanent. It broke everyone’s hearts that this little dog. who never did anything wrong to anyone, could be tied up and beaten, then dumped inside a bag. What monsters! The volunteers worked around the clock to care for Trax. As he started to improve, they could see his winning personality shine through. He was timid but certainly filled with love! After a few more weeks of treatment, Trax was ready to be put up for adoption. The sweet dog found a home FAST! The rescue group was thrilled. His past was far behind him and his future looked as bright as the sun! The rescue group has kept in touch with Trax and his new family. They send updates and photos often, showing them his happy life. Trax may have suffered but he doesn’t let that show. He’s adjusting to a world where he only knows LOVE — and his former, cruel life is like a bad dream.
